Portent

"The screech-owl, with ill-boding cry,
Portends strange things, old women say,
Stops every fool that passes by,
And frights the schoolboy from his play." [1]

On this drab winter evening, after months of fruitless searching, we finally stumbled upon a grey-morph screech owl, sheltering in the craggy remains of a storm-split tree. [2]
